What is Unique about the AUTO-GRIP® Locking Pliers?

AUTO-GRIP® is the final evolution of the original locking pliers invented by William Petersen, a blacksmith from Nebraska, in 1924.

It is the first self-adjusting, completely automatic, one-handed locking pliers that anyone can use regardless of hand size or strength. It is seven times faster and 100% easier than traditional locking pliers.

We’ve gotten rid of the bothersome and time-consuming adjustment knob on the old-fashioned locking pliers.

The AUTO-GRIP® adjusts automatically to any thickness! AUTO-GRIP® Locking Pliers – made in three sizes (and all under $20) — are professional grade, and guaranteed for life.

How does the AUTO-GRIP® work?

The AUTO-GRIP® can clamp on to various sized objects without adjustment thanks to our patented center cam, lever and lock pin located on the inside of the handle.

This is our “secret sauce”. These internal parts are manufactured from precious metals, hardened at high temperatures, and assembled in a manner that allows the plier’s jaws to adjust to various thicknesses then clamp tightly.  Gripping pressure may be regulated to each individual user’s own grip using our patented “set & forget” screw.

Once you locate the adjustment knob, increase the gripping pressure simply by turning the setscrew clockwise. To decrease, simply turn counter clockwise.  Once you have the desired clamping pressure you never have to adjust it again. It’s that simple.

Have you made any improvements to the AUTO-GRIP® Locking Pliers?

Great question and thanks for asking. We are always looking for ways to improve our products.

In response to customer feedback  about hand slippage on our original AUTO-GRIP® pliers, in 2016 we added a hard rubber grip to all pliers. Customer feedback has been fantastic!

Wasn’t there a similar product called “Lockjaw”?

Great question. The Lockjaw was a similar product in which the cam and sliding lock were not perfected so the user would often experience failure of the pliers to grip the object they were working on as the locks slipped on the bar spring.

The AUTO-GRIP® patented cam and sliding lock have been perfected to clamp automatically on thick or thin material without slipping.

What Other Products do you provide other than AUTO-GRIP®?

Yes – we sell a similarly innovative and self-adjusting AUTOGROOVE one-handed groove joint pliers, the AUTOBLADE double-ended utility knife and the AUTOWRENCH.

The AUTOGROOVE Joint Pliers have a patented gripping mechanism. This allows them to self adjust and grip onto to thick and thin objects without the need to find the groove. They are twice as fast and 100% easier than traditional groove joint pliers. The specially designed v-shaped jaws allows for a tighter grip on both round and flat objects.
